The Oilers are coming off a brutal 7-2 home loss to the Leafs. I would expect them to respond, and the matchup against the Red Wings looks favorable on paper. The main concern with Edmonton is its heavy reliance on the top line. When McDavid and Draisaitl struggle, the entire team tends to lose direction, as the supporting cast often fails to step up. With Levi injured, Jarry will take over between the pipes. He isn't among the league's elite goaltenders, so Detroit should have opportunities to find the back of the net. Edmonton's biggest advantage could be its elite power play, which remains one of the best in the NHL.
The Red Wings are still searching for consistency, and the ongoing situation surrounding Larkin isn't doing the team any favors. A separation might ultimately be the best outcome for both sides. Detroit's latest outing ended in a disappointing 4-1 loss to the Flames. Gibson gets a night off, while Tarasov is sidelined with an injury. As a result, Postava is expected to start in goal. He comes from the AHL, but that doesn't automatically mean he will struggle. We've seen plenty of occasions where backup or inexperienced goaltenders step up and deliver unexpectedly strong performances. Still, Edmonton's aggressive offensive approach could put him under significant pressure. On top of that, Detroit's penalty kill has been particularly poor, which is a major concern against such a dangerous power play.
I'm not backing the Oilers on the moneyline because the odds don't offer enough value. The Over 6.5 is worth considering, but Edmonton's team total also looks appealing. I'll trust the Oilers to score at least four goals, with particular attention to the significant mismatch on the power play.
