The Mammoth have made an impressive start to the season. Their offense is firing on all cylinders, which is hardly surprising given the amount of talent on the roster. They currently boast the league's best power play, and I expect their special teams to remain among the elite throughout the season. Goaltending, however, has yet to reach a consistent level, with both Vejmelka and Cossa showing some ups and downs. Last time out, they suffered a 6-2 defeat against the Oilers. It was a reality check of sorts, but the final score doesn't fully reflect their performance. This looks like a good bounce-back opportunity, although the odds are on the short side.
The Penguins are having a much tougher time than their opponents. They continue to concede goals regularly, with the Hawks, Avs and Knights all putting up at least five goals against them over the past week. Silovs and Murashov have both struggled between the pipes, but the defensive breakdowns in front of them suggest that goaltending isn't the only issue. Pittsburgh's penalty kill has been solid so far, but facing a young, fast Mammoth team that scores more than 30% of its goals on the power play will be a different challenge. The reality is that this aging roster struggles against high-tempo opponents, and that's precisely the kind of matchup they face tonight.
The Over 6.5 is priced too low to offer any real value in my opinion. I expect the Mammoth to find the net at least four times, making their team total the more reliable offensive angle.
