The Jets made a strong start to the season, but their form has gradually declined, and they are now riding a four-game losing streak. However, all four defeats were by a single goal, so it is not as bad as it might seem. They also faced some tough opposition during this stretch, including the Stars and Hurricanes. Hellebuyck has finally been traded to the Devils, bringing an end to a saga that had been hanging over the organization. This should allow the team to move forward and focus on hockey again. Mercer, Daws and Bjugstad have also joined the Jets as part of the deal, which I consider a positive move for Winnipeg. That said, I have to criticize the way both the organization and the fans treated Hellebuyck. It felt far too disrespectful toward a player who had been carrying the team for several seasons.
The Canadiens have struggled to put together consecutive wins, but injuries have played a major role. Demidov went down a couple of weeks ago, and now Suzuki is expected to miss another two to four weeks. His absence is a significant blow to their offensive production, meaning Slafkovsky and Caufield will need to step up. Despite these setbacks, Montreal has scored at least three goals in each of its last five games. Their first outing without Suzuki was encouraging, although the Blackhawks are still a relatively weak opponent. I am interested to see how the Canadiens perform against a defensively disciplined team. Skinner is projected to start in goal, and he is the kind of goaltender who can either deliver an excellent performance or struggle badly.
This is the Heritage Classic, an outdoor game being played in Manitoba. The weather forecast looks favorable, with sunny skies, light winds and low temperatures. Outdoor games have generally tended to produce higher-scoring results in recent years, so I am looking to back that trend. One important factor is how well the goaltenders adapt to the conditions. The angles, depth perception and overall visibility can be quite different from what they are used to in a regular indoor game. I expect the Jets to come out with extra motivation now that the Hellebuyck situation has been resolved, while the Canadiens will look to build on the momentum gained from their win over the Blackhawks.
