Both teams are on a back-to-back, but the wear and tear from the previous game is quite different. The Rockets fought the Spurs down to the final seconds in Austin and only secured the win thanks to Amen’s block. Durant played nearly 37 minutes and Sengun nearly 36, and now they have to travel to Atlanta, cross a time zone, and continue a road trip. The challenge for Houston in this game is whether its core players can maintain the same level of execution after such a high-intensity game.

The Hawks, meanwhile, beat the Hornets 128–81 on the road and were able to rest their starters early in the fourth quarter. McCollum and Okongwu each played only 21:40. Reserve Aaron Wiggins scored 19 points, and the team did not keep burning its starters just to maintain the lead. After winning both road games, the Hawks now return to Atlanta for their season home opener, which gives them more favorable preparation conditions.

In terms of personnel, the Rockets need to watch not only Adams but also VanVleet. Houston’s head coach previously made clear that the two would not play both games of back-to-backs early in the season. Both played in the previous game, so under that plan, both are expected to rest in this one. Sheppard also missed the last game with a knee injury; if he still cannot return, Houston could simultaneously lose options in playmaking, outside shooting, and offensive rebounding. Smart can make up for defense and physicality, but VanVleet’s playmaking role cannot simply be treated as already filled.

This is exactly where the Hawks’ perimeter pressure can find an opening. The Hawks recorded 17 steals in their last game, while the Rockets had 15 turnovers against the Spurs. Daniels and Alexander-Walker are capable of putting pressure on the ball handler. If VanVleet rests, Amen, Durant, and Sengun will need to take on more ball-handling duties. I am more concerned about Houston showing hesitation in passing and receiving after consecutive games. Once they turn the ball over, the Hawks can launch fast breaks before Houston gets set, reducing the time spent playing half-court possessions against Sengun and Durant.

Houston’s counter will still be rebounding. Even in a blowout win, the Hawks allowed the Hornets to grab 19 offensive rebounds, so this issue cannot be ignored. If Adams rests, Houston will lose an important anchor for crashing the boards, but Sengun, Amen, and Eason still need to box out seriously. As long as the Hawks control second-chance points and turn their superior starter energy into defensive pressure and transition opportunities, I like the Hawks. Hawks -1.5.
