The Caps have been having a decent season and look like a stronger team than they were last year. They are no longer relying so heavily on Ovechkin, which is certainly a positive sign. Jenner has fitted in well with the squad, while Leonard continues to develop nicely. The youngster could well surpass his numbers from last season. Logan Thompson is injured, so Lindgren is expected to start in goal, with Mitch Gibson recalled as the backup. In their previous game, the Caps suffered a disappointing defeat against the Kings. They took an early two-goal lead, only for Los Angeles to level the score within 30 seconds before the end of the first period. Things fell apart from there. I expect Washington to respond positively after that setback.
The Sabres have been leaking goals, and their defensive struggles are becoming a major concern. Luukkonen hasn't been able to replicate the numbers he posted two years ago, but the blue line is also making too many mistakes. On the positive side, Zucker is back in the lineup, providing a significant offensive boost. Buffalo has struggled to find the back of the net, so his return comes at a good time. Dahlin is also back after missing three games and remains a key piece of the team. The Sabres' special teams have been underwhelming, which could prove decisive tonight. Finally, Kulich didn't travel with the team after taking a puck to the face.
The Capitals look like the stronger team overall. Following their disappointing loss to the Kings, I expect them to show a much better performance. The Sabres have been unreliable at both ends of the ice, giving the hosts a clear edge in this matchup.
